Kenna makes his victorious return with ‘Relations (An Ode To You & Me)’.
If there is one track you need to listen to this month, this week or today, it is this: ‘Relations (An Ode To You & Me)’, taken from the forthcoming EP Land 2 Air Chronicles II – Imitation is Suicide, out next week. The single marks the return of Grammy nominated artist Kenna who has recently been busy re-launching Myspace where he leads the creative as Chief Vision Officer. Luckily for us, he couldn’t shake the urge to get back in the studio as this might just be the freshest, most provocative sound Velour has heard this year.
As catchy as it is smart, this heady yet sparse funk, hip hop tinged track will inhabit your mind in much the same way as the song this canny sleeve artwork references. That track being the 80s Buggles classic ‘Video Killed The Radio Star’, in-case you were wondering. But we digress. Back to Relations . Described as a ” David Byrne and Rick James inspired track” there’s no doubting the spirit of Talking Heads that dances around the melody or the enigmatic ‘Super Freak’ styled spark; but the beauty in this number is the effortless, off the cuff ease in which Kenna delivers his self declared one take verse.
“Drunk on exhaustion and heavy bass driven beats equals RELATIONS. “Don’t think so hard,” Chad said as we were cutting it. I didn’t, so neither should you.” -Kenna
Chad being Chad Hugo of the Neptunes/N.E.R.D and co-producer to this beat ridden beauty. It’s an infectious marvel to the ears and one that will require some serious replay. Take a look and a listen and get ready for the sound of ‘you and me, me and you, you and me, me and you’ becoming your friend for days.
